Contracted by Rogue Media Group to design and develop a seating area for several zones at the Upper Canada Mall. The design included a sculptural piece rigged at second floor height by the mezzanine.
![]() Client wanted to explore a circular design. After sampling the aesthetic of benches found in the mall, I proposed curved benches with room to sit on both sides. | ![]() These curved benches had a shallower sitting surface on the outside for patrons looking to take a quick break. On the inside, the surface is deeper, allowing for lounging time with the interactive media at the center of the area. | ![]() Providing Scene Shops with paperwork detailing design dimensions is key to getting accurate bids quickly. |

![]() An interactive media surface was proposed for the center of the space, level with the floor. The size of the screen proposed here was too expensive, and had to be scaled down. | ![]() At the center of the seating area, an interactive table top would reveal games or mall information. Touch sensitive, but strong enough to withstand water or the weight of someone jumping on it. | ![]() The Upper Canada Mall originally embraced a curved wave form in its architecture and it appears frequently in the mall. When designing this version of the aerial sculpture, the goal was to take the brand and theme of the mall, and turn it into something exciting. It has a dominating horizontal appearance with good opportunities for architectural lighting. |
![]() When asked whether they wanted the sculpture to be horizontal or vertical, they opted for the rising action of the design here. Using the lighting aesthetic already in the mall, I designed sculptural forms that flowed upwards, drawing attention to the second floor and the skylight. | ![]() Discussions with scene shops brought on challenges getting the sculpture within our budget. So instead of solid forms I proposed pipe drape that suggested the original sculpture but with significant cost reductions. | ![]() Discussions continued on how all of the design items would fit together... |
![]() Finally, the client requested how the sculpture would look like in their mall. Based on original measurements and visits, we created a rough facsimile of the mall interior in relation with the design. | ![]() Included in the digital design pitch was a white model which allowed the client to physically see the design proposal. This also allows the client to physically play and explore with the design without the need of 3D modeling experience. | ![]() Included in the digital design pitch was a white model which allowed the client to physically see the design proposal.
